Sir Anthony Hopkins become our Patron in 1987. Sir Anthony first set out on his acting journey when one day, with nothing in particular to do, he popped into the YMCA… The rest is history.
A letter from Sir Anthony Hopkins
“When I was 18 years old, my father insisted that I get out of the house and make some friends. I was completely without direction and he was fed up of me hanging around the house. He sent me down to the Y in Port Talbot. I had gone to play snooker, but I discovered an acting group preparing a play for Easter. I joined in reluctantly and was given a small part. I had only one line in the play – I had to stand on stage with a sheet over my head and say: ‘blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth’! I remember the thrill of that night and the feeling that, at last, I belonged somewhere. It was the beginning of a wonderful journey for me and one that I am still on.
I will always be grateful to the YMCA Port Talbot for pointing me in the right direction and giving me the confidence to move forward on that path. So, go for it, follow your dreams and above all, have fun.”
